Writing Sample for Question (1)
The graph shows the number of West Indians, Indians and Pakistanis immigrating to the U.K. from 1940 to 1970.
As can be seen, in general, immigration of these groups increased rapidly over a twenty-year period. After 1960, the number of West Indian immigrants decreased rapidly whereas the number of Indian and Pakistani immigrants continued to rise.
From 1940 to 1960, the number of Indian and Pakistani immigrants increased slightly to just under 10,000 people. Then, after an initial drop, there was a rapid increase to approximately 25,000 immigrants. Between 1965 and 1970, the number of immigrants fluctuated with an overall upward trend.
Similarly, the number of West Indian immigrants increased more moderately between 1940 and 1960 to roughly 15,000 people. Then, there was a very sharp increase over a three-year period to a peak of just under 35,000 people. From 1960 to 1970, the number of immigrants dropped dramatically with some fluctuations to just over 5,000 people.
In conclusion, it is possible to speculate that immigration from India and Pakistani may have continued to increase up to the present day, whereas West Indian immigration may have continued to decrease.
Question (2)
The line chart below shows the changes in the number of aboriginals (原住民) between 1871 and 1996 in Canada.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information on the graph. You should write at least 150 words.
Writing Sample for Question (2)
The line chart outlines the expansion of Aboriginals in Canada between 1871 and 1996. Over this period. the aboriginals population grew by approximately 10 million people.
According to the census, in 1870 Canada's initial Aboriginal population was extremely small; however, by 1881 it had rapidly increased to approximately 1.5 million and then flattened out for the next 30 years. The number of Aboriginals actually dipped slightly in 1911 before recovering. The population continued to grow at a much slower rate until 1941 when growth stalled again at around 1.8 million. Eventually, the Aboriginal population surpassed the 2 million mark in the late 1950s. This situation changed as the population rose dramatically, doubling by the late 1970s. Continually accelerating population growth saw the Aboriginal population reach 10 million by the 90s. After this dramatic rise, the Aboriginal population was projected to slow slightly, and was expected to hit 11 million by 2001.
To sum up, there was dramatic change in Canada's Aboriginal population and it projected to continue growing, albeit at a slower rate.
Question (3)
The graph below shows the result of a survey of the number of earners in families.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information on the graph. You should write at least 150 words.
Writing Sample for Question (3)
The line graph shows the changing sources of family income from 1967 to 1996. It is clear that over this period there has been a dramatic shift away from single-earner families to dual-earners.
There is a definite negative relationship between single income and two income families. As the former has decreased, the latter has increased. However, they have not changed by the same amount. While two-income families accounted for 60 percent of the total in 1996, a rise of just under 30 percent, the percentage of single-income families dropped from 60 percent to less than a quarter. The missing amount is most likely accounted for by another trend, the steady rise of the unemployed. In 1967, the percentage of unemployed families, where neither spouse is working, stood at around 9 percent. By 1996 this had nearly doubled to over 15 percent.
In conclusion, there has been a dramatic change in family income structure over this time. This could reflect the rise of female employment, but there is no direct evidence for this in the chart.
